Guilford Men’s Soccer Takes Down Emory & Henry, 5-1, Saturday Night

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Men's Soccer Team (6-6-2, 3-4-1 ODAC) took advantage of three second-half goals en route to a 5-1 win over Emory & Henry College  (2-14, 1-7 ODAC) Saturday night at Fred Selfe Stadium in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

Guilford got on the board in the 18th minute as Angel Valencia served in a corner kick that fell in front of Brenden Pearce, who slotted it past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 score.

Emory & Henry equalized just 76 seconds later (18:56) when junior midfielder Kenny Sterne (Lynchburg, Va.) found senior forward Zach James (Stephens City, Va.) with a cross that James picked out of the goalkeeper's hands and easily placed it in the net.

The Quakers would not be undone and regained the lead just over two minutes after the Wasps' goal. Valencia crossed the ball to a waiting Jovanni Catlan for the 2-1 advantage which would carry on until halftime.

In the second half, Guilford got a trio of goals to build an insurmountable lead. Robert Sandidge cleaned up a rebound of his own shot at the 57:03 mark while Corey McDonough and Christian Torres notched an insurance goal each in the final six minutes of the match. Dakota Rock and Jake Whitsett were credited with assists.

As a team, Guilford only outshot E&H by an 18-14 margin but the Quakers put eight shots on frame compared to just to for the Wasps. Michael MacVane earned the win for GC with one save while Emory & Henry freshman Didier Grillett (Matthews, N.C.) stopped three shots despite the loss.

Emory & Henry will travel to Washington and Lee University for an ODAC match on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
