LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Soccer Team evened its season record at 2-2-1 with a 2-1 victory over Cairn University (3-2) Saturday afternoon. The Wasps earn their second win in as many days, completing their Pennsylvania swing with an 8-1 aggregate score.
Both teams had opportunities early to break into the scoring column but it would be E&H that would strike first. Just past the half-hour mark, senior forward Pierce Moreland (Bristol, Tenn.) tallied an unassisted goal for his third goal of the year and his second in as many days.
The Wasps made it 2-0 just seven minutes later. Freshman forward Tyequis Stallins (Chesapeake, Va.) put a strike past the goalkeeper at the 37:25 mark after entering the contest as a substitute four minutes earlier. Emory & Henry would carry its 2-0 advantage into the break.
Cairn came out of the intermission with its eyes set on scoring, earning five corner kicks in the first 18 minutes. The Highlanders got on the board midway through the 65th minute thanks to Paul Franco's shot. Now only down by a 2-1 margin, Cairn kept the pressure on and had another five corner kicks and three shots in the final 10 minutes of action.
The Emory & Henry held strong, however, and closed the contest out for the 2-1 win. Wasp junior goalkeeper Didier Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) notched two saves to earn his second win in as many days.
Cairn held a 16-12 advantage on shots but Emory & Henry led 5-3 on shots on goal. The Highlanders earned 12 corner kicks in the match compared to just one for the Wasps.
E&H will remain on the road next Saturday when it opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play against Virginia Wesleyan College. The Wasps and Marlins will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
