EMORY, Va. – The Roanoke College Men's Soccer Team (4-3, 1-0 ODAC) scored just 47 seconds into the match and was able to hold on, defeating Emory & Henry College (5-2, 0-1 ODAC) by a 1-0 score Saturday afternoon in what was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

How It Happened
- Roanoke started the match off with a bang, scoring in the opening minute of play. Jackson Goyette took a long pass and, after playing through the last E&H defender, went one-on-one with the goalkeeper for the score.
- Senior midfielder Zach Quest (Charlotte, N.C.) nearly leveled the score at a goal apiece at the 19:27 mark but his header hit the cross bar and caromed back into the field of play.
- The first 20 minutes of the second half saw several chances for both teams to score, but the goalkeepers and defenders made crucial plays to keep the score 1-0.
- The Wasps had their best chances of the match in the 90th minute. After earning a free kick, the Wasps brought 10 men into the box and served a ball in from the left side. The cross found the head of junior forward Jordan Couch (Abingdon, Va.), who hit both the cross bar and the left post, coming extremely close to squeezing into the back of the net.
- The E&H attack was eventually cleared, and time expired for the 1-0 final margin.
Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Couch led E&H with three shots, putting one on goal while sophomore defender Joel Tidman (Milford, Va.) and Quest each had a pair of chances.
- Senior goalkeeper Dider Grillet (Matthews, N.C.) made three saves in a full-time performance in goal.
Roanoke Individual Leaders
- Goyette had the only goal of the match finishing with two shots while Kelby Zeiger and Marc Hoppler notched two shots each.
- Nick Tadros made four saves in the contest, playing 90 minutes in the Maroons' net.
A Deeper Look
- Roanoke posted a 12-10 lead on shots, but the two squads were at a dead heat, 5-5, on attempts on frame.
- The Wasps took five corner kicks in the match while the Maroons had three chances from the corner.
- RC attackers were called offside four times, while E&H was without a violation.
Notable
- Saturday marks the first time this season that E&H has failed to score.
- The six-match scoring streak for Emory & Henry is the longest since it found the back of the net in the first seven matches of the 2007 season.
- The Wasps and Maroons have played to a one-goal differential in four out of the last six years including a 3-2 double-overtime result for Roanoke last year.
