Carolina Univ. Men’s Soccer Defeats Emory & Henry, 5-2, Saturday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Carolina University Men's Soccer Team (6-6) scored three goals in the span of five minutes midway through the first half on its way to a 5-2 win over Emory & Henry College (2-8) Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium.

How It Happened
- Emory & Henry opened the scoring at the 13:25 mark of the contest as freshman forward Cesar Tobar Monge, Jr. (Charlotte, N.C.) got in behind the Carolina U. defense to receive a pass from junior forward Nino Egli (Maseltrangen, SWITZERLAND) that he put past the goalkeeper.
- The Bruins equalized midway through the 25th minute as Benjamin Fortuin converted a free kick served by Nathan Rue with a header. Three minutes later, CU took the lead as Rue got on the receiving end of a pass from Mario Salinas and one-timed it into the back of the net.
- At the 29:00 mark, Carolina U. pushed the mark to 3-1 as Rue hit Emmanuel Gyamfi with a corner kick that he headed in at the back post.
- In the second half, the Bruins went up 5-1 thanks to a free kick from Rue to Owen Vaughan to the back post and another corner kick from Rue, this time finding Rhys Thomas (50:55) for the header.
- Emory & Henry got one back late in the 70th minute for the final 5-2 score as Egli hit a strike from the top of the box over the goalkeeper's head.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Egli had a goal and an assist on two shots while junior midfielder Ben Ashfield (Reading, ENGLAND) put up a team-high three attempts with two going on target.
- Junior forward Ryan Boyette (Fredericksburg, Va.) and sophomore midfielder Louis Pereira-Scott (Glasgow, SCOTLAND) each had two shots.
- Junior goalkeeper Spencer Scott (Stephens City, Va.) made six saves as he played the entire 90 minutes.

Carolina Univ. Individual Leaders
- Rue put up a goal and four assists to lead CU as five different players scored on the night.
- Salinas paced the Bruins with six shots while Like Spillane-Davis had five attempts.
- Jeremiah Gibbs earned the win, allowing two goals.

- Emory & Henry will be on the road Wednesday when it visits the University of the South. Kickoff between the Wasps and Tigers will be at 5:00 p.m. CDT (6:00 p.m. Eastern).
