Shaw Men’s Soccer Escapes Emory & Henry, 3-2, In Overtime Saturday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Shaw University Men's Soccer Team (4-10-1) scored the match-winning goal with 3:17 left in the first overtime for a 3-2 win against Emory & Henry College (4-10) Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium. It was the final match of the year for the Wasps, who honored seniors Derek Akers (Hiwassee, Va.), Ryan Boyette (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Ethan Taylor (Powhatan, Va.) prior to kickoff.

How It Happened
- After a scoreless first half, Shaw got on the board midway through the 59th minute as Zamal Mallebranche found Wissem Obeid with a cross from the left side to the middle of the box as he put the ball in the net at the back post.
- The Wasps equalized less than one minute later (59:13) when sophomore midfielder Clarence Russell (Suffolk, Va.) played a ball in from the left side to the feet of Boyette who struck it past the goalkeeper.
- Freshman midfielder Malolan Veeravalli (Charlotte, N.C.) gave E&H the lead at the 64:35 mark taking a cross from freshman Juan Gomez-Rios (Cali, COLOMBIA) and converting it for his first collegiate goal.
- The Bears made the score 2-2 with 19:17 left to play as Obied got on the end of another cross, this time from Yassin Fawzy, one-timing it into the net.
- In the extra period, the Bears claimed the victory. Obeid played the role of helper, passing the ball ahead down the left side to Zedy Adlam, who turned inside and shot from the top of the box for the match-winner.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Boyette led the Wasps with a goal on five shots, putting three attempts on target while Veeravalli scored on his only shot of the match.
- Akers put up a strong performance in goal, making 11 saves including back-to-back stops on two separate occasions.

Shaw Individual Leaders
- Obeid scored his pair on eight attempts with five shots going on frame while Adlam and Fawzy each notched five shots.
- Marlon Cruz earned the win for the Bears, making two saves.
