Wingate Men's Soccer Defeats Emory & Henry, 7-0, Thursday In Resumed Match

WINGATE, N.C. - The Wingate University Men's Soccer Team (2-2-2, 1-0-1 SAC) scored three goals in the second half to complete a 7-0 win over Emory & Henry College (0-5, 0-2 SAC) Thursday afternoon. The first half of the match was played last Saturday evening (Sept. 10) before lightning in the area forced an extended halftime. Subsequent heavy rains made the pitch unplayable and the match was officially halted and set to be completed on Thursday.

How It Happened
- The Bulldogs took the lead in the 10th minute on a goal from Mattis Westburg and an assist from Emil Svenander. Wingate increased the lead to 2-0 just 19 seconds later on an unassisted score by Niclas Wittur.
- Wingate would add another in the 26th minute on Westburg's second goal of the game to make the score 3-0. The Bulldogs converted on a corner kick in the 39th minute as Mattia Ditommasso's cross found the head of Owen Marshall for a 4-0 margin at the half.
- In the second half Thursday, the WU wasted no time getting back into action as Fabio Rodrigues found the back of the net after a pass from Guilherme Fontes in the 50th minute. Less than eight minutes later the pair reversed roles with Fontes pushing the advantage to 6-0.
- Rodrigues capped the scoring for the Bulldogs with his second goal of the contest, this time assisted by David Sahakyan, at the 67:36 mark.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman Jackson Hughes (Dandridge, Tenn.) registered a shot on goal while fellow freshman Yossi Burch (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Juan Gomez-Rios (Cali, COLOMBIA) each fired a shot that did not find the target.
- Senior Spencer Scott (Stephens City, Va.) tallied five saves and sophomore Ty Catron (Wytheville, Va.) recorded three stops in between the sticks for the Wasps.

Wingate Individual Leaders
- Rodrigues and Westberg both tallied two goals for Wingate while Fontes put up a goal and an assist.
- Aleska Janjic earned the clean sheet in goal for the Bulldogs with one save.

- Emory & Henry returns to Fred Selfe Stadium at Nicewonder Field on Sunday, September 18 when it plays host to Newberry College to wrap up Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m,. as the second part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team.
