Newberry Men’s Soccer Too Much For Emory & Henry, 6-1, Sunday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Newberry College Men's Soccer Team (2-3, 1-1 SAC) earned its first South Atlantic Conference win of the year with a 6-1 defeat of Emory & Henry College (0-6, 0-3 SAC) Sunday afternoon. It was the first-ever SAC home match for the Wasps.

How It Happened
- Newberry got on the board in the 23rd minute as Lars Ly served up a ball for Santiago Castano who put it in the back of the net from range. The 1-0 margin would carry through halftime.
- In the second, the Wolves pushed the margin to 2-0 at the 54:43 mark when Harry McDonnell found Reese Kilpin with a follow-up on a free kick for a header into the right side of the net.
- Just after the hour, Newberry scored two more goals in quick succession to take full control of the contest. Henok Awoke linked up with Uriel Zarracan in both the 66th and 70th minutes for the 4-0 advantage.
- The Wolves added another pair of goals on the efforts of McDonnell and Quovardis Ragland, III in the final 10 minutes to extend their lead to 6-0.
- Emory & Henry spoiled the shutout with 2:21 remaining. After earning a corner kick, junior defender Louis Pereira-Scott (Glasgow, SCOTLAND) served the ball up perfectly, finding the upper corner at the back post for what would be the 6-1 final margin.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Pereira-Scott put both of his attempts on target as he scored the Wasps' lone goal of the match while freshman forward Jackson Hughes (Dandridge, Tenn.) also had a pair of chances. Sophomore forward Cesar Tobar Monge, Jr. (Charlotte, N.C.) also put a shot on frame.
- Senior goalkeeper Spencer Scott (Stephens City, Va.) tallied five saves, playing the entire 90 minutes in goal.

Newberry Individual Leaders
- Zarracan paced the Wolves with two goals on four shots while Nestor Nunez led all players with five attempts. McDonnell had a goal and an assist while Awoke tallied a pair of helpers.
- Pablo Cubas and Lockie Maher shared the win in goal, each making one save.

Up Next
- Emory & Henry will host Carson-Newman University on Wednesday for another South Atlantic Conference showdown. The Wasps will play the second part of a doubleheader with the women's team, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
