Salem Men’s Soccer Escapes Emory & Henry, 1-0, Sunday Evening In Season Finale

EMORY, Va. – The Salem (W.Va.) University Men's Soccer Team (7-5-3) scored the lone goal of the match midway through the 70th minute to escape with a 1-0 win against Emory & Henry College (0-15) Sunday afternoon.

The match also served as Senior Day for E&H, which honored its three seniors prior to kickoff.

How It Happened
- The two squads battled for the opening 45 minutes with neither side able to find the back of the net. Salem had 12 shots, seven of which went on target, and were all well-defended by senior goalkeeper Spencer Scott (Stephens City, Va.).
- In the second, the Wasps were able to find some offensive chances, but the Tigers' defense held strong. With 20:29 to play, Mauricio Aguilar Renovales drew a foul just inside the box. He called his own number for the penalty kick and converted over the outstretched hands of Scott.
- E&H had its chances late in the contest to break into the scoring column, but the 1-0 score line would hold for the final.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Sophomore forward Jado Masambeta (Uvira, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO) had three shots on goal for the Wasps while freshman midfielder Yossi Burch (Knoxville, Tenn.) tallied a pair of attempts.
- Scott made 11 saves as he played the full 90 minutes in goal, keeping E&H in the contest until the very last.

Salem Individual Leaders
- Andrea Fincato, Aiden Mahoney and Guilherme Benites each had five shots in the contest with Fincato putting up a team-best four on target.
- Ruben Pijlman earned the clean sheet, making three saves.
