Shaw Men’s Soccer Earns 3-1 Win Over Emory & Henry In Season-Opener Thursday

EMORY, Va. – The Shaw University Men's Soccer Team (1-0) scored a pair of second-half goals to propel itself to a 3-1 win over Emory & Henry College (0-1) Thursday night to start the 2023 campaign.

How It Happened
- Shaw got on the board in the fifth minute when a cross by DaVion Page ricocheted off the boot of an E&H defender and into the back of the net for an own goal.
- The Wasps equalized with 8:11 to go before the intermission as freshman defender Grayson Cunningham (Kingsport, Tenn.) ripped an attempt from 30 yards out past the goalkeeper.
- Returning to action, the Bears regained the advantage with a goal just 3:15 into the half. Hoslerson Joseph ran onto a pass from Tyrique Bell and split the centerbacks with a nifty touch before finishing.
- Shaw gave itself an insurance goal in the 85th minute as Nathan Skeete converted a penalty kick for the 3-1 final margin.  

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Cunningham led the way with a goal on his only shot of the contest while sophomore midfielder Yossi Burch (Knoxville, Tenn.) also notched a shot on target.
- Fifth-year forward Nino Egli (Maseltrangen, SWITZERLAND) posted a team-best three attempts.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Ty Catron (Wytheville, Va.) suffered the loss despite making six saves.

Shaw Individual Leaders
- Skeete put up a game-high four shots including his penalty-kick goal. Hoslerson was accurate with his foot, scoring once with three shots on frame.
- Pablo Bas Colomer earned the victory between the pipes for the Bears, making one save.
