Newberry Men’s Soccer Slips Past Emory & Henry, 1-0, Saturday Afternoon

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College Men's Soccer Team (2-1-1, 1-0-1 SAC) scored the lone goal of the game in the 36th minute as the Wolves held off the Wasps of Emory & Henry College (0-4, 0-2 SAC) Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action.

How It Happened
- Both squads had a pair of chances in the opening 25 minutes but the defenses held strong. Newberry struck at the 35:28 mark as Henok Awoke found Benjamin Martinez with a pass that Martinez slotted in into the goal.
- The Wolves put one more shot on target in the final 10 minutes of the opening half, but it was turned away to keep the score 1-0 at the intermission.
- The second 45 saw the two teams battle back and forth but neither were able to break through for a match-winner.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Freshman midfielder Gabe Franco (Charlotte, N.C.) tied the match-high with four shots, putting three on target while freshman midfielder Tin Zymelka (Frankfurt, GERMANY) added a shot on goal.
- Junior Ty Catron (Wytheville, Va.) made five saves on the afternoon, playing the full 90 minutes between the pipes.

Newberry Individual Leaders
- Martinez scored the match-winner on his only attempt of the afternoon. Uriel Zarracan notched three shots on goal on four chances.
- Jacob Cotton stopped four shots as he earned the shutout.

Emory & Henry remains on the road on Wednesday when it visits Carson-Newman University for a SAC doubleheader. The men will play at 5:00 p.m., while the women take the field at 7:30 p.m.
