How It Happened
The two squads went back and forth in the opening 45 minutes as neither was able to find the back of the net. The Bears held a 7-1 shot advantage, putting three attempts on target and also led, 2-1 on corner kicks.
After the break, E&H and Shaw continued their stalemate through the hour mark. Early in the 66th minute, the Bears earned a free kick 25 yards out on the left side of the field. A foul was called on an Emory & Henry midfielder attempting to clear the ball out of the box against a Shaw player with his back to the goal and a penalty was awarded. Kyle Hatmaker stepped to the spot and put the ball to the left side of the goal. E&H keeper sophomore Josiah Wilson (Cleveland, Va.) guessed correctly but the strike was strong enough to find the back of the net for a 1-0 Bears' lead with 24:52 remaining.
Just under three minutes later, Shaw would lead 2-0 as a back pass by an E&H defender went under the boot of the goalkeeper and crept into the bottom corner of the net.
Both teams had chances in the final 20 minutes, but the 2-0 scoreline would hold as final.
