
EMORY, Va. – The Barton College Men's Soccer Team (1-0) opened up a 2-0 lead and held off a rally by Emory & Henry University (0-2) for a 3-1 win Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

How It Happened
Barton took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. A foul near the corner flag produced a set piece for the Bulldogs as Gabriel Slemer Lopes served up a ball to the back post which found Kai Thurston, who hammered it home. The 1-0 scoreline would hold through the end of the first half.
Just before the hour mark, BC struck again. Slemer Lopes was on the receiving end of a pass across the box that he slipped through the legs of a defender and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Emory & Henry got one back with 18:46 left to play. The Wasps started their attack on a goal kick that was settled by sophomore midfielder Francisco Beron de Astrada Aquino (Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA) and fell to the feet of junior forward A.J. Dale (King George, Va.). Dale hit the half-volley from 30 yards out to the near post past a diving goalkeeper to make it a 2-1 contest.
Barton answered in the 81st minute to make the final score 3-1. A series of passes from a free kick got to Hayden Summerfield, who found Tommy Migliarotti on a run inside the 18-yard box and beat the goalkeeper to his right.
Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
Dale scored on his only attempt of the contest sophomore midfielder Gabe Franco (Charlotte, N.C.) had a pair of chances. Sophomore defender Grayson Cunningham (Kingsport, Tenn.) also put a shot on target.
Freshman Emilio Hernandez-Araujo (Pineville, N.C.) made seven saves despite the loss in his collegiate debut.
Barton Individual Leaders
Slemer Lopes had a goal and an assist on two shots while Migliarotti and Luis Weber each posted three attempts.
Steingrimur Gunnarsson and Tripp Kidd combined for the shutout with Gunnarsson making one save in 83-plus minutes of action.
Up Next
E&H will host Anderson University on Sunday at 5:30 p.m., to open South Atlantic Conference play. The contest between the Wasps and Trojans will be the second half of a doubleheader as the women's teams will play at 3:00 p.m.
