Emory & Henry Men’s Tennis Outlasts Hampden-Sydney, 5-4, To Open Spring Season

ROANOKE, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Tennis Team (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play and won at the first three singles flights to defeat Hampden-Sydney College (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) by a 5-4 score Monday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. Hampden-Sydney is ranked number 15 in the Atlantic South Region preseason poll by the ITA.

Emory & Henry began the match by picking up two victories in doubles play. The number one pair of junior Matt Nelson (Galax, Va.) and senior Adam Henderson (Abingdon, Va.) defeated Kevin Calhoun and Ian Sammler, 8-6, while junior Chip Wintringham (Burlington, N.C.) and senior Mike Young (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won at number two doubles, 8-4, over Barrett Polan and Zack King.

In singles competition, E&H picked up wins in the first three flights. Nelson got a three-set victory over Calhoun (2-6, 6-3, 6-1), Wintringham defeated King, 6-1, 6-0, and Henderson won over Sammler, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

At number five singles, E&H junior Webster Gilley (Bristol, Tenn.) took his match to three sets, after winning the first set 6-3. Franklin Bowers ended up winning the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Emory & Henry will return home on Tuesday to face Greensboro College in a non-conference matchup. The Wasp women will also be in action against the Pride, with first serve set for 3:00 p.m.
