Greensboro Men's Tennis Slips Past Emory & Henry, 5-4, Sunday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Greensboro College Men's Tennis Team (1-2) squeaked past Emory & Henry College (1-1) Sunday afternoon, 5-4, in non-conference play.

The Wasps got out to a 3-0 lead after the singles portion of the match. Seniors Matt Nelson (Galax, Va.) and Adam Henderson (Abingdon, Va.) picked up an 8-3 win at number one doubles while senior Webster Gilley (Bristol, Tenn.) and freshman James Keighley (Heswall, ENGLAND) won by the same 8-3 margin at the second doubles flight.

Senior Zach Eccher (Madison, Ala.) and freshman Alex Minasyan (Moscow, RUSSIA) swept number three doubles, 8-0.

Eccher picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win at number two singles to give the Wasps their four points as Greensboro won easily at three through six singles.

In the No. 1 singles pairing, Gilley and Greensboro's Matt Miller went to three sets, with Miller prevailing 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-0 in a two-and-a-half hour marathon to take the match.

Emory & Henry will return to the hardcourt on Saturday when it opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play against Hampden-Sydney College. The match will take place on the campus of Sweet Briar College at noon.
