Emory & Henry Men’s Tennis Keeps Rolling Tuesday With 8-1 Win Over Regis

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Tennis Team (4-1) picked up an 8-1 win over Regis (Mass.) College early Tuesday afternoon and is currently ahead of Wilkes University, 4-3, after the match was suspended due to darkness.

Emory & Henry jumped out to a 5-1 lead after playing the singles portion of the match with Regis first. Senior Matt Nelson (Galax, Va.) picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at number two singles while senior Webster Gilley (Bristol, Tenn.) won 6-0, 6-1 at the third singles flight.

Freshman Alex Minasyan (Moscow, RUSSIA) only dropped two games as he won 6-2, 6-0 at the top singles spot while senior Zach Eccher (Madison, Ala.) was victorious, (6-0, 6-2) at number four singles.

The Wasps dominated doubles play, dropping only four games across the three matches. Nelson and senior Adam Henderson (Abingdon, Va.) (No. 1 doubles) and sophomore John Hanlon (Bristol, Tenn.) and Jonathan Romano (Bland, Va.) (No. 3 doubles) each won by 8-1 scores.

Tuesday evening against Wilkes, the Wasps took number two and three doubles for a 2-1 advantage.

Freshman James Keighley (Heswall, Mercyside, ENGLAND) picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at number one singles while Gilley earned a three-set win at the fifth singles flight. The Colonels won at number four and number six singles to close the gap to 4-3.

Nelson and Minayan's matches yet to be finished as play was stopped at 10:00 p.m., Tuesday evening when the lights at Hilton Head High School reached the end of their automatic timer. Both are leading their matches one set to none.

E&H will finish the match with Wilkes on Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. The Wasps will also face the Tigers of Wittenberg University on Thursday evening at 6:30.
