HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Tennis Team completed a sweep of the week's matches Thursday at Hilton Head. The Wasps closed out their suspended contest with the Wilkes University Colonels, 6-3, to start the day and claimed a hard-fought 5-4 win over the Tigers of Wittenberg University.
Emory & Henry 6, Wilkes 3
After the match was halted due to darkness on Tuesday night, the Wasps held a 4-3 advantage with two singles flights late in the second set. Thursday morning, freshman Alex Minasyan (Moscow, RUSSIA) closed out his match, 6-1, 6-4 while senior Matt Nelson (Galax, Va.) won in a third-set tiebreak (10-3).
Emory & Henry 5, Wittenberg 4
E&H got a pair of wins during doubles play and then took the top three singles matches as they it defeated Wittenberg by a 5-4 score.
Nelson and senior Adam Henderson (Abingdon, Va.) won, 8-2, at the top doubles pairing and Nelson added a three-set singles win.
Freshman James Keighley (Heswall, Mercyside, ENGLAND) earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory at number one singles while Minasyan rolled, (6-1, 6-1) at the second individual spot.
Henderson and senior Webster Gilley (Bristol, Tenn.) both fell in third-set tiebreakers in what were hard-fought matches.
Emory & Henry will next take the court on Saturday, March 16 when they face Virginia Wesleyan College and Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Lexington, Va.
