Averett Men’s Tennis Outlasts Emory & Henry, 5-4, Sunday Afternoon

DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University Men's Tennis Team (1-0) outlasted Emory & Henry College (0-1) for a 5-4 win in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Averett Tennis Courts. The start of the match was delayed for 30 minutes due to rain showers, but conditions improved and play was able to get underway.

Averett went up 2-1 after doubles play. The Wasps got their point at the top pairing as junior Alex Minasyan (Moscow, RUSSIA) and sophomore John Dalton Ferguson (Gate City, Va.) won 8-6.

In singles play, Minasyan claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win at the premier singles flight while freshman Alex Polydoroff (Falcon Heights, Minn.) won, (6-2, 6-1) at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Luke Funkhouser (Gate City, Va.) also picked up a win, (6-4, 6-2) in the fifth singles spot.

The match came down to the wire, hanging on the result at No. 3 singles. The Cougars claimed the win after a second-set tiebreak went their way.

Emory & Henry will return to competition on Tuesday, September 23 when it travels to Buena Vista, Virginia for a match against Southern Virginia University. The match is a makeup of Saturday's postponed contest, which was rescheduled due to rain.
