Emory & Henry Men's Tennis Handles UVA Wise, 6-1, Saturday At Home

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Men's Tennis Team (1-0) got the NCAA Division II era started with a 6-1 win over Southwest Virginia-rival University of Virginia's College at Wise (0-2) Saturday morning.

NCAA Division II rules for tennis differ slightly as the three doubles matches count for one point together and the six singles matches each count for a point.

How It Happened
The Wasps grabbed the first two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the contest. Freshman Juan Alvarez (Metepec, MEXICO) teamed up with senior Archer Marlow (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) to claim a 6-3 win at No. 1 while senior Brandon McGuire (Christiansburg, Va.) and freshman Corey Garrity (Spartanburg, S.C.) won 6-3 at the second doubles flight. 

In singles play, McGuire grabbed a 6-4, 7-6 (1) win at the premier pairing while Marlow won, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2. Alvarez made it two wins on the day with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the third singles fight as Garrity won, 6-2, 6-0, at the fourth pairing. Freshman Alvaro Garcia (Madrid, SPAIN) dropped just one game in his debut at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-0.
