Emory & Henry Men’s & Women’s Tennis Open The Spring Season Saturday

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Men's & Women's Tennis Teams got the spring portions of their seasons started with a pair of matches on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday. Both squads took on West Virginia Wesleyan College and Lincoln Memorial University.

The Men's Basics
MATCH ONE
– West Virginia Wesleyan 7, Emory & Henry 0
MATCH TWO – Lincoln Memorial 6, Emory & Henry 1
LOCATION – Harrogate, Tennessee
VENUE – Indoor Tennis Complex
RECORDS – Emory & Henry (3-4)

The West Virginia Wesleyan Match
The Bobcats opened up a 1-0 lead in the match after sweeping doubles. In singles action, freshman Corey Garrity (Spartanburg, S.C.) forced a tiebreak set at No. 4 but fell, 10-5.

The Lincoln Memorial Match
E&H got a victory at No. 1 doubles from senior Archer Marlow (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and freshman Juan Alvarez (Metepec, MEXICO) by a 7-5 score but the doubles point went to LMU as they claimed the other two matches.

In singles against the Railsplitters, Alvarez won by a tiebreak score of 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) at the second flight. Marlow also battled tough at No. 3, forcing a tiebreak in the first set.

The Women's Basics
MATCH ONE

MATCH TWO – Lincoln Memorial 7, Emory & Henry 0

The West Virginia Wesleyan Match
Freshman Sabina Chernega (Odesa, UKRAINE) came from behind to win in a tiebreak at No. 1 – 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1). Sophomore Tess Flanigan (Marietta, Ga.) also dropped her opening set, 6-4, but rallied to force a tiebreak with a 6-3 win. She claimed a 10-3 win in the tiebreak to give the Wasps a victory at No. 3.

The Lincoln Memorial Match
The Railsplitters grabbed the doubles point with ease, dropping only three games. In singles play, Chernega battled at the top flight but dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) decision.

Up Next
Emory & Henry will compete next weekend in the Transy Invite. Both squads will face Asbury University and Transylvania University. The men's team will take on Birmingham-Southern College for its third match while the women meet Illinois Wesleyan University.
