Emory & Henry Men’s & Women’s Tennis Compete At The Transy Invite Over The Weekend

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Emory & Henry College Men's & Women's Tennis Teams returned to action over the weekend with three matches each in the Transy Invite, hosted by Transylvania University. Both squads went 1-2 on the weekend as the mean beat Transylvania by a 6-3 score and the women blanked Illinois Wesleyan University, 7-2.

The Men's Basics

Emory & Henry opened the weekend with an 8-1 loss to Asbury but had a bright spot at No. 1 doubles. Senior Brandon McGuire (Christiansburg, Va.) and freshman Corey Garrity (Spartanburg, S.C.) won by an 8-4 score. Senior Archer Marlow (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) forced a tiebreak in both of his sets at No. 2 singles, but fell 7-6, 7-6.

Also on Saturday, the Wasps defeated host Transylvania by a 6-3 margin. E&H got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Marlow and freshman Juan Alvarez (Metepec, MEXICO) won, 8-4, at the top flight while McGuire and Garrity eked out an 8-7 win at No. 2. In singles, the Wasps won the second through fifth flights to seal the victory. Marlow got a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 2 while Alvarez won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Garrity was victorious, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4.

The Wasps faced Birmingham-Southern on Sunday earning wins in two singles matches. Alvarez picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 while Garrity notched a tiebreak win – 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) at the fourth flight.

Emory & Henry grabbed two wins against the Eagles at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles. Freshman Sabina Chernega (Odesa, UKRAINE) and sophomore Molly McMichael (Riner, Va.) won, 8-7 (4) in a tiebreak at doubles while Chernega downed her opponent, 6-4, 6-0 in singles.

The Pioneers won all three doubles matches and swept singles for the 9-0 win. Chernega was able to force a tiebreak at No. 1 singles as did freshman Bronwyn McAlindon (Kingsport, Tenn.) at No. 6.

In the final match of the weekend, E&H defeated Illinois Wesleyan. The Wasps started the match with a 2-0 lead due to unfilled spots at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Emory & Henry grabbed another two wins at doubles to lead 4-0. In singles play, sophomore Tess Flanigan (Marietta, Ga.) and freshman Ann Gray Perdue (Bluefield. Va.) blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. McMichael won – 6-1, 6-1 – at No. 3 and freshman Sueanna Breedlove (Midlothian, Va.) took a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fifth flight.
