Emory & Henry Cross Country Finishes Season At NCAA Regional Race Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Emory & Henry Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams completed the 2013 season Saturday at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Championship Saturday afternoon. The meet was hosted by Christopher Newport University at their Lee Hall Mansion Course.

The E&H men finished 21st of 24 teams in the race and were eighth among Old Dominion Athletic Conference schools. Freshman Alex Cooper (Christiansburg, Va.). Cooper, who was the first Wasp named ODAC Runner of the Week since the 2007 season, covered the 8K course in a time of 28:16 to finish first on the team.

Second for Emory & Henry was sophomore Nathan Fishell (Richmond, Va.), who ran the race in 28:26. Freshman Kevin Watts (Stafford, Va.) and sophomore Will Leigh (Hamilton, Va.) clocked times of 29:31 and 29:43, respectively while freshman Jackson Feezell (Gastonia, N.C.) was fifth (32:24).

Bridgewater College took home the regional title, adding to their Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship. John Kieffer of Centre College earned medalist honors, finishing the course in a time of 24:32.

On the women's side, Emory & Henry's runners all had personal record times for the 6K distance. The Wasps only ran with four athletes, as a few nagging injuries kept them from competing at full strength.

Sophomore Leslie Sierra (Front Royal, Va.) was first for E&H, running a 26:31 while sophomore Elizabeth Wilson (Roanoke, Va.) recorded a time of 26:57. Freshman Audra VanDerwerker (Bedford, Va.) and sophomore Gabbie Rhodes (Richmond, Va.) were third (28:23) and fourth (28:40), respectively.

Trinity (Tex.) University placed three runners in the top four to take home the team title led by Maddie Murphy's run of 21:33.
