Emory & Henry Softball Splits A Non-Conference Doubleheader With Bluefield Monday

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (5-11) split a pair of games with Bluefield College (1-17) Monday afternoon in non-conference action. The Wasps picked up a 9-7 win in game one while the Lady Rams won 11-8 in the nightcap.

Game One - Emory & Henry 9, Bluefield 7
Emory & Henry got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks in part to a RBI single to right field by freshman first baseman Katie Grimm (Staunton, Va.).

Bluefield responded with runs in the third and fifth innings to tie the contest at two. Megan Meismer got RBI base hits for the Lady Rams to drive in both runs.

The Wasps exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth frame to take a 9-2 lead. A single to left centerfield with the bases loaded by freshman designated player Jelisa McFadden (Lake City, S.C.) scored two runs while junior catcher Ashley Ebersole (Maurertown, Va.) plated two runs with a single up the middle.

In the top of the sixth, Bluefield closed the gap to 9-7 with five runs on three hits. A three-run double by Heather Thomas with the bases loaded highlighted the inning for the Lady Rams.

Emory & Henry sophomore pitcher Jennifer True (Utica, N.Y.) went the distance scattering eight hits and one earned run while striking out six. Meismer suffered the loss for Bluefield.

Game Two - Bluefield 11, Emory & Henry 8
Bluefield led off the game with two runs in the top of the first on a single to left field by Lindsay Sizemore. The Lady Rams added to their lead in the third on another RBI single by Sizemore and a three-run home run by Meismer in the top of the fourth made the score 6-0.

The Wasps got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by sophomore second baseman Martha Fluharty (Halifax, N.C.). E&H plated three runs in the sixth to make the score 6-4. A pair of sacrifice flies by senior left fielder Nicole Holdaway (Blacksburg, Va.) and Grimm aided the Wasps in the frame.

In the top of the seventh, Bluefield extended its lead to 11-4. The Lady Rams got nine hits on the frame, hightlighted by a solo home run by Ashley Alley.

Emory & Henry was able to close the gap to 11-8 in the bottom of the seventh but could get no closer. Ebersole hit her team leading third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left centerfield while junior Veronica Blankenship (Roanoke, Va.) plated two runs on a single through the left side.

Sizemore got the win in the circle for Bluefield while Grimm fell to 1-5 with the loss.

On the day, freshman third baseman Bethany Anderson (Dublin, Va.) was four-for-seven with two doubles and four runs scored while Grimm went three-for-seven with three RBI and Ebersole plated four runs.

Emory & Henry will host Hiwassee College in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m.
