Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps A Pair From Bluefield Wednesday Afternoon

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (10-18) picked up a pair of victories over Bluefield College Wednesday afternoon. E&H won by scores of 11-2 and 11-3.

Game One - Emory & Henry 11, Bluefield 2 (five innings)
Emory & Henry got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run to left field by sophomore Jennifer True (Utica, N.Y.). The Wasps extended their lead to 5-1 in the third on another home run by True.

The Wasps got five runs in the fourth thanks in to a triple by senior shortstop Jenae Morrissey (Utica, N.Y.) and a diouble by junior Veronica Blankenship (Roanoke, Va.) with the bases loaded.

True picked up the win in the circle to move to 6-8 on the year. She pitched three innings allowing just four hits and two runs. Freshman Brandy Bryant (Salem, Va.) pitched the final two innings in relief, striking out three.

Game Two - Emory & Henry 11, Bluefield 3 (six innings)
The Wasps scored two runs in the first inning for the second straight game and led 5-0 after three. Freshman second baseman Bethany Anderson (Dublin, Va.) hit a two run single in the third to highlight the frame.

Bluefield closed the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the third thanks in part to a two-run double by Megan Meismer.

E&H added two runs in the fourth on a double by sophomore third baseman Martha Fluharty (Halifax, N.C.) and got three more in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. The Wasps got their 11th run in the top of the sixth to fulfill the requirements of the Eight-Run Advantage Rule.

Bryant got the win for E&H, allowing just three hits in six innings of work with four strikeouts while Fluharty was the star at the plate with three doubles on three-for-four hitting. Blankenship and freshman first baseman Katie Grimm (Staunton, Va.) each had three hits in the contest as well.

Emory & Henry will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. this weekend for ODAC doubleheaders against Eastern Mennonite and Bridgewater.
