No. 23 Bridgewater Sweeps Emory & Henry, 6-1 And 10-1, Sunday In ODAC Action

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The No. 23 Bridgewater College Softball Team (29-5, 11-3 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins on Sunday afternoon over visiting Emory & Henry College (11-21, 2-12 ODAC). The Eagles won by scores of 6-1 and 10-1 over the Wasps, respectively.

Game One – No. 23 Bridgewater 6, Emory & Henry 1
Bridgewater got out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a pair of RBI singles by Kasey Anderson and Aven Thomas. The Eagles added three more runs in the third for a 6-0 advantage.

Emory & Henry got on the board in the fifth on a RBI groundout by senior shortstop Jenae Morrissey (Utica, N.Y.).

Heather Jenkins picked up the four-hit complete-game win for the Eagles while E&H sophomore Jennifer True (Utica, N.Y.) took the loss.

Game Two – No. 23 Bridgewater 10, Emory & Henry 1 (six innings)
The Eagles got started in the second inning of game two with Brea Hinegardner's RBI double to right centerfield.

E&H tied the contest at one run apiece in the top of the third after a leadoff double by sophomore centerfielder Cortney Halsey (Independence, Va.) put her in position to be driven home by a fielder's choice groundout by Morrissey two batters later.

Bridgewater got the lead for good in the bottom of the third and added three in the fifth on RBI doubles by Hillary Rees and Thomas.

The Eagles fulfilled the requirements of the Eight-Run Advantage Rule with a five-run sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Thomas drilled a grand slam to centerfield to make the final score 10-1.

Summer Ramsey earned the three-hit win for Bridgewater striking out four batters. Freshman Brandy Bryant (Salem, Va.) took the loss for E&H despite striking out six.

On the day, Thomas was four-for-seven for the Eagles with a home run and seven RBI while Rees had three hits including two doubles, while she scored three runs. E&H was led by Halsey and sophomore third baseman Martha Fluharty (Halifax, N.C.) with two hits apiece. Morrissey drove in both of the Wasps' runs on the day.

Emory & Henry returns home on Wednesday to face Roanoke College in an ODAC doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
