Bridgewater Softball Sweeps Emory & Henry Sunday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Bridgewater College Softball Team (18-8, 8-2 ODAC) picked up a pair of victories over Emory & Henry College (10-17, 2-9 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The Eagles won by scores of 8-0 and 14-6.

Game One – Bridgewater 8, Emory & Henry 0 (five innings)
Bridgewater got out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Eagles took advantage of four hits including a two-RBI single to left center by Heather Jenkins.

BC made the score 4-0 in the top of the second and added two more runs in the top of the third thanks to a two-run shot by Brea Hinegardner.

In the top of the fifth, Bridgewater got the final two runs it needed to satisfy the conditions of the Eight-Run Advantage Rule. Karie Burgess drew a bases loaded walk which proved to be the difference-making run.

Kasey Anderson and Aven Thomas were both two-for-three with two runs scored while Burgess, Hinegardner and Jenkins drove in two runs each. Jenkins picked up the three-hit shutout with five strikeouts.

E&H sophomore Katie Grimm (Staunton, Va.) fell to 5-2 on the year with the loss as she allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Game Two – Bridgewater 14, Emory & Henry 6
The Eagles got two runs to start off the game in the top of the first. Burgess and Hinegardner both had RBI singles.

Emory & Henry scored a pair of runs in both the second and third innings for a 4-2 lead. Junior centerfielder Cortney Halsey (Independence, Va.) and junior second baseman Martha Fluharty (Halifax, N.C.) each drove in runs.

Bridgewater turned on the offense and scored in 12 runs across the final four innings of the game. Thomas, Jenkins, Leigh Lam, Sarah Goodman and Kelsey Limbert each hit home runs. Lam's round tripper in the fifth and Jenkins' homer in the seventh each plated three runs.

E&H got its final runs in the bottom of the fifth as senior catcher Ashley Ebersole (Maurertown, Va.) and freshman third baseman Hannah Bays (Abingdon, Va.) each had RBI doubles.

Thomas and Goodman had three hits each while Jenkins and Lam both drove in a trio of runs. Thomas picked up the complete-game win despite allowing 12 hits and walking three batters.

Halsey lead the Wasps at the plate with three hits and scored two runs. Bays, Fluharty and freshman right fielder Kaitlyn Pruitt (Abingdon, Va.) each had two hits in the game. Freshman Taylor Banner (Castlewood, Va.) took the loss in the circle.

Emory & Henry will play host to Virginia Intermont College on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch for the non-conference doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m.
