Virginia Intermont Softball Takes Two From Emory & Henry Tuesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. - The Virginia Intermont College Softball Team (28-10) picked up a pair of non-conference wins over Emory & Henry College (10-19) Tuesday afternoon at Wasps Field. The Cobras won by scores of 15-2 and 12-8.

Virginia Intermont scored eight runs in the first three frames and never looked back as it went on to defeat E&H 15-2 in six innings. The Cobras hit four home runs in the contest and were led by Katie Smith as she had four RBI and three runs on two hits. Chelsea Forney had three hits and two RBI as well for VI.

E&H got its two runs in the bottom of the fifth as freshman shortstop Hannah Bays (Abingdon, Va.) singled up the middle to plate one run. The Wasps' other run came courtesy of an error by the Cobras.

In the nightcap, Emory & Henry was able to get out to a 3-2 lead after the first inning as it took advantage of two Virginia Intermont errors, two hits and a pair of walks.

VI got up 6-4 after three innings thanks to a pair of two-run home runs by Hannah McCloud and Chelsea Forney.

Down by a 7-4 margin in the bottom of the fourth, Emory & Henry took an 8-7 lead. Sophomore shortstop Bethany Anderson (Dublin, Va.) and junior second baseman Martha Fluharty (Halifax, N.C.) each had run-scoring singles in the inning.

The Cobras responded with four runs in the fifth including a two-run single by Rachel Cook. A sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth by Megan Perry-Shifflet made the final score 12-8.

E&H junior Sylvia Robbins (Smithfield, Va.) had two hits on the day and drew four walks, scoring three times. Senior catcher Ashley Ebersole (Maurertown, Va.) was avoided all day by the Cobra pitchers, going one-for-two with five walks and four runs scored.

The Wasps will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they host the Hornets of Shendandoah University at 12:00 p.m.
