Shenandoah Softball Sweeps Emory & Henry Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Shenandoah University Softball Team (20-14, 8-8 ODAC) claimed a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference victories over Emory & Henry College (10-21, 2-11 ODAC) Saturday afternoon. The Hornets won by scores of 16-2 and 6-2 over the Wasps.

Game One – Shenandoah 16, Emory & Henry 2 (five innings)
Shenandoah got out to an 8-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Morgan Coble hit a three-run home run to left field to get things going and Kimberly Brady made it back-to-back with a solo shot to center field. Brittany Guepe also had a two-run single later in the frame.

In the top of the second, SU got two more runs on a single up the middle by Madison Bradley. The Hornets made it 12-0 after three as Erica Kondzielawa hit a two-run homer to centerfield.

Shenandoah got four more runs in the fourth to go up 16-0 but Emory & Henry answered in the bottom of the frame to avoid the shutout. Freshman shortstop Hannah Bays (Abingdon, Va.) belted her eighth home run of the season to centerfield to make the score 16-2.

Stephanie Cameron picked up the win in the circle for SU, scattering three hits over four innings of work with nine strikeouts. E&H sophomore Katie Grimm (Staunton, Va.) fell to 5-3 on the year with the loss.

Game Two – Shenandoah 6, Emory & Henry 2
The Hornets got on the board in the top of the second inning when a throwing error by the Wasps allowed a pair of runs to score with two outs. Emory & Henry made it 2-1 in the bottom of the second as freshman first baseman Taylor Doss (Damascus, Va.) plated sophomore third baseman Bethany Anderson (Dublin, Va.) when she grounded out.

Shenandoah made the score 3-1 as Brady hit her second home run of the day, this one a solo shot to left centerfield. In the top of the fifth, the Hornets added two more runs highlighted by a run-scoring double by Coble.

The Wasps got their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as junior centerfielder Cortney Halsey (Independence, Va.) homered to centerfield for her sixth of the 2013 campaign.

Brady rounded out the scoring in the top of the seventh for Shenandoah, hitting her third home run of the day to make the final score 6-2.

Megan Tripp picked up the win in the circle for the Hornets, scattering six hits and two runs over seven innings of work. Emory & Henry sophomore Brandy Bryant (Salem, Va.) fall to 2-9 as she went the distance for the Wasps, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts.

For the day, Bays and Halsey led the way at the plate for the Wasps with three hits and a home run each. Anderson was two-for-five with a pair of runs scored.

E&H will travel to Greensboro, N.C., on Sunday afternoon for an ODAC doubleheader with Guilford College. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
