Lynchburg Softball Sweeps Emory & Henry Saturday Afternoon In ODAC Play

EMORY, Va. – The Lynchburg College Softball Team (30-7, 15-3 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins Saturday afternoon over Emory & Henry College (11-25, 3-15 ODAC). The Hornets defeated the Wasps by scores of 8-5 and 5-0.

Game One – Lynchburg 8, Emory & Henry 5
Lynchburg got out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning, taking advantage of two E&H errors.

The Wasps got a run back in the bottom of the first as freshman shortstop Hannah Bays (Abingdon, Va.) hit her 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. Bays ties senior catcher Ashley Ebersole's (Maurertown, Va.) record for home runs in a season.

The Hornets made the score 4-1 in the top of the second as Kacey Clary homered to left field. In the bottom of the third, junior centerfielder Cortney Halsey (Independence, Va.) closed the gap to 4-2 with a solo home run to left field, her seventh of the year.

LC got two runs in the top of the fourth as both Cassie Phillips and Clary hit solo home runs to make the score 6-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Emory & Henry got within one run as freshman first baseman Taylor Doss (Damascus, Va.) crushed a three-run bomb with one out over the centerfield fence.

The Hornets gave the game its final 8-5 margin in the top of the seventh with Phillips' second home run of the day, this one a two-run shot to right field.

Clary led the way for Lynchburg, going four-for-four at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Phillips was two-for-four with three RBI and a pair of runs. Hope Johnson picked up the complete-game win in the circle, scattering eight hits and seven strikeouts over seven innings of work.

E&H was paced by Doss, whose lone hit of the game drove in a trio of runs while junior second baseman Martha Fluharty (Halifax, N.C.) had a pair of hits and a run scored. Sophomore Brandy Bryant (Salem, Va.) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in four innings pitched.

Game Two – Lynchburg 5, Emory & Henry 0
Lynchburg got out to a 1-0 lead in the second as Amber Ingram helped her own cause with a solo home run to centerfield.

The Hornets got four runs in the third to close out the scoring. A two-run singled up the middle by Ingram highlighted the frame that featured three hits and a hit batsman.

E&H had opportunities in the first and third as it was able to get runners in scoring position, but was not able to push them across.

Ingram went two-for-four with three RBI and a run scored as she picked the three-hit win with five strikeouts. Nicole Riley was three-for-four at the plate as well for the Hornets.

Emory & Henry freshman Taylor Banner (Castlewood, Va.) took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits and three walks.

The Wasps will conclude the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon with an ODAC doubleheader against the WildCats of Randolph College. The contest will serve as Senior Day for E&H and will begin at 2:00 p.m.
