Lynchburg Softball Takes Two From Emory & Henry Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Lynchburg College Softball Team (22-9, 10-2 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins over Emory & Henry College (18-4, 8-4 ODAC) Saturday afternoon. The Hornets took game one by a 7-0 score and finished the afternoon with a 14-4 victory.

Game One – Lynchburg 7, Emory & Henry 0
The Hornets got single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to open up a 3-0 lead. Skylar Seals had a double down the left field line in the second to start the scoring and added a run with a home run in the fourth.

Lynchburg added four runs in the top of the seventh. Danielle Powell plated two with a one-out single to centerfield while Logan Walker drove in two more three batters later to make the final score 7-0.

Powell finished the game two-for-four with three RBI while Walker and Seals had two hits and two RBI each. Conner English earned the shutout win, striking out seven in her complete-game performance.

Emory & Henry managed just two hits in the game, both of which came from freshman right fielder Danielle Loving (Elizabethton, Tenn.). Senior right-hander Brandy Bryant (Salem, Va.) fell to 6-1 on the year, allowing five runs on nine hits in six-plus innings pitched.

Game Two – Lynchburg 14, Emory & Henry 4
The Wasps started the game off with a run in the bottom of the first. Loving singled to centerfield, driving in high-school teammate and third baseman Caley Hodge (Elizabethton, Tenn.) from third base.

Lynchburg got seven runs in the top of the third. Kayla St. John got things going with a two-run homer to centerfield and made it four RBI in the inning on a single through the left side, plated another pair.

E&H got two runs back in the fifth to close the gap to 7-3. Sophomore second baseman Riley Pudney (Beech Mountain, N.C.) doubled to right centerfield to drive in a run and came around to score on a groundout by Hodge one batter later.

LC answered with two runs of its own in the sixth as Seals singled up the middle with the bases loaded, making the score 9-3.

The Wasps added another run in the sixth when junior left fielder Hannah Bays (Abingdon, Va.) went the opposite way with a pitch over the fence.

In the top of the seventh, Lynchburg got five more runs to make the final score 14-4 as Seals got two more RBI and Jessi Hall notched a solo home run.

St. John led the Hornets with five hits, four RBI and two runs while Seals drove in five on two hits. Amber Ingram was four-for-five with two runs while Walker scored three times. Hope Johnson earned the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts.

Loving and Pudney each had two hits and a RBI while freshman centerfielder Leah Elswick (Raven, Va.) and Bays had a hit and a run with Bays adding a RBI. Senior Roxanne Hillman (Clintwood, Va.) took the loss, allowing seven runs in 2.2 innings pitched.

Emory & Henry will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Lynchburg, Virginia for an ODAC doubleheader with Randolph College. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
