Emory & Henry Softball Earns Shutout Sweep Over Randolph, 3-0 And 6-0, Saturday On The Road

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (19-11, 9-3 ODAC) got its eight-game roadtrip underway on Saturday with a shutout sweep over Randolph College (12-17-1, 3-11 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The Wasps won by scores of 3-0 and 6-0, allowing just one WildCat hit on the afternoon.

Sophomore Cameron Derr (Cornelius, N.C.) tossed a no-hitter in game one, the second of her career and first for E&H since she accomplished the feat against Meredith College in a 7-0 win on February 24, 2018. Sophomore Alex Braun (Cornelius, N.C.) fanned a career-high 13 batters, coming up just two short of the school record.

It was the first time that the Wasps have held an opponent scoreless all afternoon since defeating Shenandoah University by scores of 10-0 and 8-0 last season (Mar. 30, 2018).

Game One – Emory & Henry 3, Randolph 0
Emory & Henry broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third with three runs. Senior catcher Amanda Whitlow (Riner, Va.) drove in freshman Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) with a base hit and came around to score on an error by the right fielder. Sophomore first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.) hit a solo home run on the next at bat to cap the scoring, 3-0.

Derr earned the victory with her no-hitter, striking out 11 while walking four. Lindsey Chaney suffered the loss for the WildCats, allowing three runs on just three hits despite striking out six.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 6, Randolph 0
After four scoreless innings, the Wasps woke up their bats in the fifth and got some offense going. Senior right fielder Rachel Smoot (Riner, Va.) doubled up the middle to plate the first run and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Freshman left fielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) also scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0.

In the sixth, senior designated player Madison McClanahan (Abingdon, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to push the margin to 4-0. E&H finished the contest off with two runs in seventh as Varner and junior shortstop Leanna Toler (Abingdon, Va.) both had RBI base-knocks.

Braun allowed just one hit on the afternoon to lead off the fifth, but all five baserunners were stranded as she struck out 13. Randolph's Abbi Pannill took the loss, with six runs allowed on six hits and four walks.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road tomorrow when it visits Guilford College for an ODAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
