SALEM, Va. – The #2 Emory & Henry College Softball Team (25-14) started the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament off with an 11-1 "run-rule" drubbing of #7 Ferrum College (19-20) Friday night at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex.

Sophomore first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.) tied the single-season E&H record for home runs with her 12th blast of the year during the contest.

LOCATION
– Salem, Virginia
VENUE – James I. Moyer Sports Complex

How It Happened
Ferrum got on the board in the top of the first when Allison McGehee tagged a double to right-centerfield, driving in Cheyenne Strickland. The Wasps responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame when senior designated player Madison McClanahan (Abingdon, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to right-centerfield and junior shortstop Leanna Toler (Abingdon, Va.) stole home.

In the second, E&H pushed their margin to 4-1 on Varner's two-run bomb to left-center. Emory & Henry went up, 5-1, on a double by junior third baseman Lyndsay Boyd (Abingdon, Va.) which plated McClanahan.

The Wasps exploded for six runs in the fourth to take an 11-1 advantage. Toler got the inning started with a RBI single to right field and on the next at bat, senior centerfielder Erin Anderson (Aylett, Va.) reached on a fielder's choice error that allowed a pair of runs to cross the plate. McClanahan also added a run-scoring single in the inning.

Sophomore right-hander Cameron Derr (Cornelius, N.C.)  fanned nine as she allowed one run on three hits with one walk. Ashton Lambeth suffered the loss, permitting five runs on six hits.
