EMORY, Va. – The Emory & College Softball Team (4-0) picked up a pair of "run-rule" shutouts against visiting Averett University (0-2) Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Wasps picked up the 11-0 game-one win in walk-off fashion and used a big third inning to claim the nightcap victory by the same 11-0n score

Game One – Emory & Henry 11, Averett 0 (five innings)
E&H got on the board in the bottom of the first when senior shortstop Kyndall Hiatt (Ararat, Va.) plated senior first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.). The Wasps made it 2-0 in the third on another hard ground ball by Hiatt, driving in senior designated player Alex Braun (Lexington, S.C.).
In the fourth, E&H added four runs to make the score 6-0. Hiatt once again came through for the Wasps, highlighting the inning with a two-run double to center field. Emory & Henry pushed five across in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
The Wasps struck first in the frame when sophomore right fielder Emily Scaggs (Riner, Va.) scored when Varner hit a fly ball to left field. E&H ended the game on the next batter when Braun hit a grand slam for the final 11-0 score.
Senior right-hander Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) earned the two-hit shutout victory, striking out nine. Averett's Kaitlyn Aherron suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs on one hit in three innings with four walks and three strikeouts.
Game Two – Emory & Henry 11, Averett 0 (five innings)
The Wasps jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning as Braun tagged a two-run homer to left-centerfield.
Emory & Henry made it 9-0 with seven in the third. Freshman designated player Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) got things going when she belted a two-run shot to left-center. Two batters after Scaggs drove in senior third baseman Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.) with a ground ball to shortstop, junior left fielder Nicole Cox (Cedar Falls, N.C.) cleared the bases with a single through the right side and came around to score after a fielding error.
E&H capped the scoring, 11-0, in the fourth when senior Hannah Morrison (Lebanon, Va.) drilled a pinch-hit double to right field.
Braun also earned the shutout in the circle, allowing just two hits and one walk with six strikeouts. AU's Taylor Sullivan took the loss, permitting five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Up Next
Emory & Henry was scheduled to play four games this weekend at home, hosting Brevard College, University of Dubuque and Tusculum University in a round-robin event, but the forecast of rain has forced these games to be called off.
The Wasps will be back in action on Saturday, March 6 when they host Maryville (Tenn.) College. These games were originally scheduled for Sunday, February 21.
