Emory & Henry Softball Splits With Barton Saturday Afternoon On The Road

WILSON, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (3-1) split a pair of games at Barton College (5-1) Saturday afternoon. The Wasps took game one by a 7-3 score while the Bulldogs responded to win game two by a 3-1 margin.

Game One – Emory & Henry 7, Barton 3
E&H broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third with three runs. Senior centerfielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) doubled to left field to get things started before a two-run double by freshman designated player Reece Chasteen (Lake City, Fla.).

Chasteen highlighted a four-run fifth inning as she hit a three-run home run over the left-centerfield fence. Senior second baseman Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame to make it a 7-0 game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Barton got on the board with two runs as Kandyce Condrey doubled to left field and was driven in by a groundout by Sloane Correa one batter later. The Bulldogs made it a 7-3 contest in the bottom of the sixth on a double to left buy McCrae Knapp.

Sophomore right-hander Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on six hits while striking out eight. Rilee Jones suffered the loss, as she permitted seven runs on five hits and five strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Game Two – Barton 3, Emory & Henry 1
Barton opened up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a RBI single down the left-field line by Knapp. Mikayla Rose made it a 3-0 contest after two thanks to a two-run homer to left.

Emory & Henry spoiled the shutout in the top of the sixth as freshman shortstop Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.) tagged a solo shot to right. The Wasps got a pair of runners aboard in the seventh but were unable to complete the rally as the Bulldogs won, 3-1.

Thomas suffered the loss in the circle for E&H, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings. Freshman MaKayla Dowdy (Blacksburg, Va.) pitched four innings of one-hit ball in relief. BC's Miranda Holmes picked up the win, allowing just one run on seven hits in 6.1 innings. AnnaKate Gilchrist earned the save, pitching the final two outs of the game.

Emory & Henry will close out its weekend roadtrip on Sunday at noon when it faces Elizabeth City State University.
