Emory & Henry Softball Drops A Pair Of Games Sunday At King Invitational

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (10-5) led in both of its contests Sunday but came up short to King (Tenn.) University and Queens University of Charlotte. Queens won the first game by a 3-2 score while King was victorious, 9-7.

Game One – Queens (N.C.) 3, Emory & Henry 2
Emory & Henry got on the board in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by junior right fielder Emily Scaggs (Riner, Va.). The Royals tied things up in the third as Kaylee DeJesus doubled down the left field line to drive in Kasidi Staley.

In the fifth, fifth-year first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.) put the Wasps ahead again with a home run to left field.

Queens got the go-ahead run in the seventh. After Ashlyn Mickler singled through the right side to tie the contest, Haley Hmiel plated Mickler with a double and the 3-2 lead.

Haley Nelson earned the win in relief for the Royals, striking out three while allowing no base runners in the final two innings of the game. E&H sophomore Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run on five hits and 11 strikeouts.

Game Two – King (Tenn.) 9, Emory & Henry 7
King broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Carly Turner and Camryn Haag both had RBI base hits in the frame.

The Wasps responded with seven runs in the fifth. Senior second baseman Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) got things going with a sacrifice fly while sophomore designated player Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) and Scaggs both plated a pair with base hits to highlight the frame and give E&H a 7-4 lead.

The Tornado got five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 9-6. Haag and Delaney Porter each drove in two runs with base hits.

Nikole Counts pitched the final 2.1 innings for King to pick up the win, striking out three while allowing just two hits. E&H freshman MaKayla Dowdy (Blacksburg, Va.) took the loss, permitting three runs in her relief appearance.
