West Alabama Softball Tops Emory & Henry, 7-2, Sunday Morning

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of West Alabama Softball Team (6-3) opened a 5-0 lead on its way to a 7-2 win over Emory & Henry College in the final day of the Old Coast Classic, hosted by Flagler College. The Wasps and Tigers only got in one contest of their scheduled doubleheader as field conditions were still not playable following rain on Friday and Saturday.

How It Happened
The Tigers got on the board in the top of the first when Kelsie Gilliam scored from second base. She stole third and the catcher's throw was off line, allowing her to advance the final 6-0 feet. West Alabama made it 2-0 later in the frame when L.P. Trammell executed a squeeze play to plate Anne Marie Stanbridge.

In the second, Stanbridge got on the other side of run production, hitting a bases-loaded double down the right-field line to push the margin to 5-0.

Emory & Henry got on the board in the bottom of the third as sophomore third baseman Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.) drove in freshman designated player Kylie Cundiff (Roanoke, Va.) with a double to right.

UWA responded with a run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Trammell. E&H got a sacrifice fly of its own in the bottom of the frame from freshman shortstop Rachel Hill (Stanardsville, Va.) for a 6-2 margin.

West Alabama capped the scoring at 7-2 in the fifth with Leah Beth Stewart singling up the middle.

Madison Wright earned the complete-game win for the Tigers, allowing just one earned run on four hits and nine strikeouts. Wasp junior Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) took the loss, permitting seven runs on 10 hits and four walks despite nine strikeouts of her own.
