Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps Coker, 8-0 & 11-3, Wednesday In SAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (15-14, 6-8 SAC) picked up a run-rule sweep against Coker University (7-24, 0-12 SAC) Wednesday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader. The Wasps won the first contest by an 8-0 score and completed the day with an 11-3 victory in game two.

Game One – Emory & Henry 8, Coker 0 (six innings)
After three scoreless innings, E&H got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore shortstop Rachel Hill (Standardsville, Va.) hit a RBI double down the left-field line. Junior centerfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) posted a RBI infield single while another run scored on a single by junior right fielder Danielle King (Spencer, Va.).

The Wasps pushed the margin to 5-0 through five as Hill plated a pair with a base knock to right. Emory & Henry ended the game in the sixth as junior first baseman Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.) hit a three-run shot to right-center for the 8-0 final margin.

Sophomore right-hander Kylie Cundiff (Roanoke, Va.) earned the abbreviated shutout, scattering five hits and one strikeout in six innings. Coker's Madie Andrews suffered the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits with two walks in 4.1 innings.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 11, Coker 3 (five innings)
The Cobras struck in the top of the first as Abbie McCants plated a pair with a single to left-center. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore second baseman Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.) got things started with a RBI double down the left-field line. Senior designated player Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) gave the Wasps a 3-2 lead with a home run and Cundiff pushed another run across on a sacrifice bunt.

In the second, Coker closed the gap to 4-3 on a single up the middle by Kelsi Scott. Emory & Henry responded in the bottom of the third on solo home runs by Silvis and junior pitcher Olivia Yates (Floyd, Va.) to make the score 6-3.

The Wasps scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as King hit a RBI double and senior left fielder Katelyn Siekerka (El Cajon, Calif.) swatted a two-run shot over the wall in left-center for a 9-3 advantage. E&H ended the game in the fifth at 11-3 on a pair of RBI base hits by King and Siekerka.

Yates earned the win in relief, scattering two hits and a walk with two strikeouts over the final three innings of the game. Tibby Hessian took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings.
