Lynchburg Women’s Basketball Rallies For A 66-58 Win Over Emory & Henry Friday

EMORY, Va. – The Lynchburg College Women's Basketball Team (4-10, 3-6 ODAC) rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to defeat Emory & Henry College (1-10, 0-9 ODAC) Friday evening inside the John Rutledge King Center in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. E&H saw four players reach double figures in scoring despite the loss.

After battling to a 5-5 tie early in the contest, the Wasps saw themselves up by three with 14:09 remaining in the first half. Emory & Henry reeled off a 13-0 run that covered 4:55 for a 25-9 advantage.

The Hornets were able to chip away at the Wasps' lead over the rest of the opening period and it looked as if they would be down by only seven at the half. E&H freshman guard Valerie Beale (Greensboro, N.C.) pushed the lead back to 10 (38-28) with a three-pointer from the left corner as time expired.

After the break, Lynchburg opened the second stanza with an 8-2 run to cut the Emory & Henry lead to four (40-36) and went ahead by three with 7:53 remaining. After a pair of free throws by freshman guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) put the Wasps back on top by one, the Hornets responded with a layup by Carly Greenlief to regain a lead they would hold for the rest of the contest.

E&H was able to trim the margin back to one, but a 5-0 run by Lynchburg put the contest out of reach as they held on for the 66-58 victory.

Lynchburg was led offensively by Greenlief with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Shannon Allen had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Roslyn Alexander pitched in 13 points of her own. The Hornets, who shot 24.4 percent in the first half, responded with a 12-for-25 (48.0 percent) showing in the second half and held a 22-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

Emory & Henry was paced by Williams with 14 points and six rebounds, making four threes in the contest. Freshmen Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) and Carlyta Hamm (Wytheville, Va.) had 13 points each and added eight and seven rebounds, respectively while senior forward Ashlyn Baird (Boone, N.C.) chipped in 12 points on the night.

E&H will return to Bob Johnson Court on Saturday when it hosts the WildCats of Randolph College. Tipoff for the ODAC contest is set for 4:00 p.m.
