Hollins Women's Basketball Outlasts Emory & Henry, 91-83, Tuesday Evening

EMORY, Va. - The Hollins University Women's Basketball Team (6-10, 5-7 ODAC) picked up a 91-83 win over Emory & Henry College (2-11, 1-10 ODAC) Tuesday evening at the John Rutledge King Center. Hollins shot 48.4 percent (31-for-64) from the floor in the contest en route to the win.

The two teams traded baskets early in the contest to a 13-11 lead by the green-and-gold at the 14:12 mark in the first half. Hollins went on a 15-6 run that covered the next 6:36 for an 11-point lead (28-17). The Wasps scored 18 of the next 28 points to cut the margin to three points (38-35 with 2:15 remaining). Hollins would take a 46-42 lead into the half.

After the break, E&H came out with three straight points to trim the lead to one (46-45), but Hollins went on a 12-2 run to push its advantage back to double digits. The Wasps were able to get within four points (72-68) with 6:50 left in the game, but the green-and-gold reeled off nine of the next 10 points for a 81-69 advantage. Emory & Henry would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way, but scored the last two points of the contest on a pair of free throws by freshman center Carlyta Hamm (Wytheville, Va.).

Hollins, which placed five players in double figures, was led by Lauren Morris with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Brandi Chesne added 19 points off the bench. Jasmine Greene registered 13 points nine rebounds, seven steals and six assists while Molly Tahmaseb and Lacie Forrest chipped in 11 points each.

Emory & Henry was led by freshman guard Valerie Beale (Greensboro, N.C.) with career-highs in points (22) and assists (nine). Beale also put up five rebounds and three steals on the night. Freshman guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) had 20 points, connecting on six three-pointers, while Hamm finished the night with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Senior forward Ashlyn Baird (Boone, N.C.) had 10 rebounds and nine points in the game.

Hollins outshot E&H 48.4 percent (31-for-64) to 39.2 percent (29-for-74) for the game but the Wasps held a 49-41 rebounding advantage, pulling down 24 offensive boards.

The Wasps will remain at home on Saturday when they host the Generals of Washington and Lee University at 4:00 p.m.
