EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (5-3) made it four in a row on Saturday evening as it defeated Covenant College (5-3), 97-70, at the John Rutledge King Center. It was the highest point total for the Wasps since January 15, 2008 when E&H defeated Hollins University, 98-46.
Sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) tied the Emory & Henry record for three-pointer made in a game with nine. She finished the game with a career-high 31 points. She ties the record held by Katie Brann, set on December 10, 1994 against Eastern Mennonite.
The two teams battled back and forth for the first part of the game. With the contest tied 25-25, E&H went on a 20-7 run over the last 8:05 of the half to take a 45-32 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Emory & Henry picked up where it left off. A 14-5 run early in the period gave the Wasps a 62-38 lead with 14:00 remaining. The Lady Scots would never get any closer than 16 points (67-51 at the 10:01 mark). E&H finished the contest on a 14-4 run and were just a split-second away from hitting a buzzer-beating three-pointer to reach triple digits.
Sophomore guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had 21 points and three assists while freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) tallied her sixth double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds, adding three assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) had nine points, three steals and two assists while junior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) tallied seven points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
E&H shot 53.6 percent (37-for-69) for the game and dished out 26 assists. The Wasps were a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe and hit 15-of-32 (46.9%) of their three-point attempts.
Covenant was led by Jessie Blankenship with 20 points while Haley Soles and Alexis Storteboom each chipped in 13 points apiece.
Emory & Henry will travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania next Saturday to face Gwynned-Mercy College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
