GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Gwynedd-Mercy College Women's Basketball Team (6-2) used a late-game run to defeat Emory & Henry College (5-4), 80-66, Saturday afternoon at the Griffin Complex. The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Wasps.

E&H got out to a 5-0 lead to start the game but GMC tied the contest at seven points apiece at the 12:18 mark. The two squads would battle back and forth with the Griffins taking an eight-point lead (33-25) with 29 seconds remaining. The Wasps got a pair of free throws from junior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) before the break to close the gap to 33-27.

Beginning the second half, Emory & Henry sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) scored five-straight points to cut the lead to 33-32, but a 10-2 run by Gwynedd-Mercy pushed the advantage to 43-34. The Wasps then reeled of 10-straight points for a 44-43 lead with 12:42 on the clock. Both teams traded baskets until E&H got its final lead of the game (61-60 at the 4:52 mark) on a jumper by freshman forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.).

The Griffins finished the contest on a 20-5 run, leading by as much as 15 in the last minute, as they won, 80-66.

GMC was led by Nicole Dougherty with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists while Natasha Matthews had 20 points, nine boards, two blocks and two steals. Lauren Smith and Shea Wassel each chipped in nine points apiece. For the game, the Griffins shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the floor and led the battle of points in the paint, 46-24.

McPherson finished the game with 14 points for Emory & Henry, shooting 6-for-10 from the field, and adding four rebounds and two steals. Freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) put up yet another double-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds and three assists while Wright had 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) came off the bench to scored 13 points for E&H. As a team, the Wasps shot just 35.3 percent (24-for-68), outrebouding the Griffins, 44-39.

Emory & Henry will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m., when it faces DeSales University.
