Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Escapes With A 78-76 Victory Over Randolph-Macon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (7-7, 4-2 ODAC) picked up a 78-76 victory over Randolph-Macon College (2-12, 2-4 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center. Junior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) hit the game-winning layup with one second remaining on the clock, her second game-winning basket in as many games.

Freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) had another stellar performance on the boards, pulling down a school-record 24 rebounds in the game, breaking the mark set on February 24, 1984 by Carolyn Foster when she had 22 against Lynchburg.

Randolph-Macon got out to a 10-2 lead at the 15:44 mark of the first half but then Emory & Henry went on an 8-0 run to tie the contest at 10 highlighted by a four-point play by freshman guard Tenesha Connor (Greensboro, N.C.).

Down 18-12 with 10:19 on the clock, the Wasps went on 16-5 run thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers by sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.). E&H would go on to take a 41-38 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, Emory & Henry extended its lead to seven (45-38) in the first 1:46 of the half. Down 51-45 at the 16:06 mark, R-MC went on an 11-0 run to go up 56-51, the Yellow Jackets' largest lead of the second half.

The Wasps were able to tie the contest at 59 on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) and would never trail again. The two squads would battle back and forth through the final 10 minutes of the game. Randolph-Macon's Paige Mills knotted the score at 76-all on a pair of free throws with 76 seconds remaining.

E&H was unable to score on its next possession but held strong on defense and got the ball back with 27 seconds remaining. The Wasps played for the final shot and after Farr missed a layup and got her own rebound, she found Wright open on the opposite block where she scored the game-winning layup for the second time in as many games.

McPherson led Emory & Henry offensively with a career-tying 24 points as she hit six three-point baskets in the game, and added five rebounds and three steals. Farr finished with 19 points and two assists to go along with her school-record 24 rebounds, 15 of which were on the offensive glass.  Langley had 13 points, three rebounds and three assists while Wright registered six points, four steals and two rebounds.

As a team, Emory & Henry shot just 36.3 percent (29-for-80) for the game but benefitted from 22 second-chance points and 30 points off turnovers.

Randolph-Macon's Sarah Parsons posted 24 points off the bench to lead the Yellow Jackets. Khajae Hester and Caroline Young each tallied 10 points with young pulling down 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. R-MC shot 49.2 percent (30-for-61) but suffered from 21 turnovers in the contest.
