Hollins Women’s Basketball Rallies To Defeat Emory & Henry, 76-63, Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – The Hollins University Women's Basketball Team (7-12, 3-8 ODAC) erased an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Emory & Henry College (7-12, 4-7 ODAC), 76-63, Wednesday night at the John Rutledge King Center in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown.

The two teams battled hard for the first half as neither team led by more than five points until the final seconds of the period. There were seven ties and five lead changes in the first half alone. With the score tied at 32 and 1:45 on the clock, Emory & Henry went on an 8-0 run to finish the half including a three-point basket by sophomore guard Valerie Beale (Greensboro, N.C.) with five seconds remaining for the 40-32 margin.

Hollins scored five-straight points coming out of the break to cut the margin to 40-37, but Emory & Henry pushed its lead back to six a minute later (18:00). Hollins took its first lead since the 4:30 mark of the first half with 9:29 remaining on a pair of free throws by Jasmine Greene. The green-and-gold used an 11-0 run for a 65-55 lead with 3:11 left in the game.

Emory & Henry was able to trim the deficit to seven points with 90 seconds remaining (70-63) but Hollins finished the contest with six straight points for the 76-63 final score.

Greene finished the game with 37 points as she went 11-for-16 from the field and hit 15-of-19 free throw attempts. She also added six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Lacie Forrest registered 10 points while Chanci Wright tallied nine points and 13 rebounds.

As a team, Hollins shot 55.6 percent (25-for-45) for the game and scored 36 points in the paint. HU also held a 39-28 rebounding advantage in the contest.

The Wasps were paced by sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) as she scored 14 points off the bench. Freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) had 10 points and eight rebounds while sophomore center Carlyta Hamm (Wytheville, Va.) had nine points. Beale registered eight points and junior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) and sophomore guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) each notched six points.

E&H went 22-for-57 (38.6%) from the field and hit 72.2 percent (13-of-18) of its free throws. The Wasps held a 36-12 advantage on bench scoring in the game.

Emory & Henry will remain at home on Saturday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite University. Tipoff for the ODAC contest is set for 3:00 p.m.
