Roanoke Women’s Basketball Takes Care Of Emory & Henry, 78-66, Wednesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Roanoke College Women's Basketball Team (6-7, 2-3 ODAC) claimed a 78-66 victory over Emory & Henry College (3-11, 1-4 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening at Bob Johnson Court.

The two teams battled to a seven-all tie at the 15:48 mark of the first half. Roanoke went on a 7-2 run to take a 14-9 lead but Emory & Henry responded to trim the margin to 16-15 with 10:25 on the clock. The Maroons led by as much as 15 points in the opening 20 minutes of play as they took a 39-27 lead into the locker room.

After the break, E&H cut the deficit to seven points early, but a 6-0 run by Roanoke pushed the lead back to 15 (54-39) to tie the biggest margin of the game with 13:43 left to play. The Wasps continued to fight and got the score to within five points on three different occasions down the stretch, but the Maroons scored six-straight for an 11-point advantage with 90 seconds to play, putting the contest out of reach.

Guilford was paced by Paxton Gwin's 21-point, eight-rebound performance while Kelsey Smith had 16 points on six-of-11 shooting. Laurel Hankins and Tatum McKee notched 13 points each and pulled down eight and seven boards, respectively. Bridget Holleran had nine points, four rebounds and a game-high eight assists.

For the game, the Maroons shot 41.7 percent (25-for-60) and hit 22-of-29 (75.9%) of their free throw attempts. Roanoke also held a 43-36 rebounding advantage in the contest.

E&H junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had 12 points and six rebounds to lead the Wasps while sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) notched 10 points and five boards. Freshman guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) tallied eight points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals while sophomore guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore center Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) each added eight points of their own.

Emory & Henry was just 39.7 percent (25-for-63) from the floor but connected on a season-high eight three-pointers (47.1%). The Wasps only made it to the free throw line 10 times, hitting eight of their attempts.

E&H will have its first road contest of 2014 on Saturday when it travels to Lynchburg College for a 2:00 p.m., ODAC contest with the Hornets.
