Guilford Women’s Basketball Outlasts Emory & Henry, 58-47, Wednesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Women's Basketball Team (13-3, 5-2 ODAC) needed nearly all 40 minutes of regulation Wednesday evening for its 58-47 win over Emory & Henry College (3-13, 1-6 ODAC). The Wasps took the two-time defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions almost to the wire, but came up just short in the end.

E&H got out to a 5-0 lead in the first 1:47 of the game but GC bounced back with an 11-2 run for an 11-7 advantage with 9:34 on the clock. The score would remain tight for the rest of the half with a 6-0 run by the Quakers before the break marking the difference on the scoreboard, 27-22.

Guilford scored the first four points of the second half, forcing a timeout by Emory & Henry. Coming out of the stoppage, the Wasps went on a 14-4 run to take their first lead (36-35) since the 1:33 mark of the first half. E&H pushed the advantage to a four-point lead but the seasoned Guilford team bounced back with a 13-0 run for a 51-42 margin.

The Wasps were able to trim the margin to six with 72 seconds left but would get no closer as the Quakers, who reached the NCAA Division III Tournament the past two seasons, hit seven of their last nine free throws to seal the 58-47 win.

Guilford was led by Gabby Oglesby's double-double as she put up 19 points and 15 rebounds and added two blocks. Anais Weatherly had eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals while Lila Scott had eight points of her own. As a team, the Quakers shot 38.0 percent (19-for-50) from the floor and hit 17-of-24 (70.8%) of their free throws. GC also held a 22-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Emory & Henry sophomore guard Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) had a team-high 13 points and added seven rebounds while junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) notched nine points and pulled down eight boards. Sophomore forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) registered eight points and six rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench. Senior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) sophomore guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) added six points apiece with seven and six rebounds, respectively.

The Wasps shot just 24.7 percent (18-for-73) for the game but connected on five three-pointers and hit six-of-eight (75%) of their free throws. E&H held a 46-45 rebounding advantage and snagged 15 offensive boards. Emory & Henry also won the turnover battle, forcing 14 Guilford miscues, compared to just nine of its own.

Emory & Henry will travel to Randolph College on Saturday afternoon for an ODAC matchup with the WildCats. The contest is set to tip-off at 4:30 p.m.
