Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Handles Bridgewater, 79-67, On Senior Day Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (6-16, 4-9 ODAC)shot 61.3 percent from the field during the second half en route to a 79-67 victory over visiting Bridgewater College (7-15, 5-9 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center. As the final home game of the 2013-14 season, the Wasps celebrated Senior Day, honoring JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) prior to the contest.

The first half was as tight as they come, featuring seven ties and six lead changes. The largest lead of the opening 20 minutes was only four points, achieved by the Wasps on two different occasions. A three-pointer by freshman guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) with 51 seconds to go before the break gave E&H a 32-30 lead.

Bridgewater started out scoring four of the first six points of the second half for a 34-34 tie, but Emory & Henry responded with a 5-0 run to go up 39-34 and force a timeout. The Wasps pushed their advantage to 17 (58-41) with 10:44 to go in the game thanks to a 9-0 run. BC slowly chipped away at the lead but could get no closer than 10 points with 2:19 on the clock, setting up a 6-1 run by E&H to put the game out of reach.

The victory was the first for Emory & Henry over Bridgewater since January 15, 2005, when the Wasps squeaked away for a 49-48 win at Nininger Hall.

Sophomore forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) paced E&H with 18 points and 10 rebounds to complete the double-double while junior guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had a game-high 20 points and added five boards. Sophomore guard Courtney Puckett (Bassett, Va.) tallied 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench while sophomore center Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) notched 10 points as well. Jacoby finished the game with seven points, seven assists and three rebounds while Wright had nine rebounds.

As a team, Emory & Henry shot 50 percent (30-for-60) for the game including their 19-for-31 showing in the second half. The Wasps hit seven three-pointers and were 12-for-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line.

Bridgewater was led by Heather Cantrell's 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Molly Shelley had 15 points, seven boards and five steals while Holly Morgan notched 11 points and eight rebounds. The Eagles were just 33.3 percent (24-for-71) for the game shooting and only hit two-of-16 (12.5%) of their three-point attempts.

Emory & Henry will travel to Greensboro, N.C., on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m., for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game with Guilford College. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday, February 12, but the recent winter storm forced its postponement.
