Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Handles Sewanee, 71-64, On The Road To Open Season

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (1-0) opened the "Four Quarters" Era with a 71-64 victory over The University of the South (0-1) Saturday evening at Juhan Gymnasium. The Wasps shot 54.7 percent (29-for-53) in the game in earning the victory.

E&H opened things up with a 17-13 lead in the first period. The Wasps went up 10-3 with 5:18 on the clock as senior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) scored seven points as the Wasps notched 12 points in the paint in the opening 10 minutes. In the second stanza, Emory & Henry pushed its advantage to 34-18 thanks to lights-out shooting (eight-for-10) solid defense that produced a 15-3 scoring run and a 16-point lead at the intermission.

After the break, Sewanee began to heat up from three-point range, as Sue Kim went three-for-four in the period alone. The Wasps were able to push their advantage to 19 (41-22) with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter and connected on five-of-six free throws to hold off the Tigers' bid to get back in the game.

Trailing 51-34 with 10 minutes left to play, Sewanee found itself with a lot of work to do. The Tigers answered the challenge, hitting five three-pointers and shooting 10-for-17 (58.8%) from the floor to score 30 points in the period. A 14-4 scoring run that covered 2:37 cut the margin to 63-53, but Emory & Henry's lead was too large.

The Wasps shot 77.8 percent (seven-for-nine) to close things out and hit free throws when they needed as the Tigers could get no closer than six in the final minute despite nearly equaling their offensive output from the first three quarters in the closing act alone.

Brewster scored a game-high 17 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Wasps. Junior guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) had 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists while senior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) added 10 points on five-for-seven shooting with six boards and four assists. Freshman guards Hannah Cox (Lebanon, Va.) and Taylor Blevins (Abingdon, Va.) finished with nine and eight points, respectively and added six rebounds each.

As a team, Emory & Henry won the battle down low, 38-14, and led in second-chance points, 11-5. The Wasps pulled down 48 rebounds including 11 on the offensive glass compared to just 23 boards by the Tigers.

Sewanee was led by Jamie Chauvin with 17 points and six rebounds. Corey Caulder had 14 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers while Kim finished the game with 12 points off the bench. Savannah Rose added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.

The Tigers shot 33.3 percent (21-for-63) for the game, including a 15-for-29 (51.7%) mark in the second half, and connected on 11 shots from downtown. Sewanee also forced E&H into 23 turnovers, scoring 19 points, and limited themselves to just 12 miscues. However, cold shooting in the opening 20 minutes proved to be too much to come back from.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Tuesday when it travels to Raleigh, North Carolina to face the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
