EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (3-0) remained perfect on the year with an 80-34 win over Wesleyan (Ga.) College (0-3) Saturday afternoon at Bob Johnson Court. The Wasps have won 10 of their last 13 games dating back to last season and begin the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since the 1987-88 season.
The two teams went back and forth early in the first quarter to an 8-8 tie with 5:58 on the clock. Emory & Henry then went on a 12-2 run to finish the period for a 20-10 lead at the first break. Senior forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) had nine points and four rebounds in the first 10 minutes alone.
After a three-pointer by Wesleyan's Kyla Williamson opened the scoring in the second stanza, Emory & Henry went on a 14-1 run over the final 7:39 of the first half to lead 34-14 at the intermission. The Wasps scored 20 of their 34 points in the paint, and converted 10 first-half offensive rebounds into 10 second-chance points.
E&H kept the pressure on, outscoring Wesleyan by a 22-2 margin in the third quarter. The full run the Wasps went on which ran into the middle of the fourth period stood at 58-10 over 29:19 of play. For a second game in a row, Emory & Henry was able to get several of its young players significant playing time as all 17 players that suited up played six minutes or more, 16 of whom put their mark in the scoring column.
Emory & Henry led by as much as 51 points in the last minute and a half of the game but the Wolves notched the final five points of the contest to get the final margin to 46, 80-34.
Farr led all players with 18 points on eight-for-11 shooting with six rebounds, two steals and a block in just 15 minutes on the court. Senior forward Tamara Brewster (Morrow, Ga.) had 10 points and nine rebounds in just 16 minutes played while freshman forward Laken Blackburn (Wilkesboro, N.C.) and senior forward Amanda Stanley (Mooresville, N.C.) added eight and seven points, respectively.
Sophomore guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va.) had five points, four assists and seven steals in the game while junior guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va.) added five points, and three assists. Senior guard Anna Green (Raleigh, N.C.) chipped in five points off the bench while freshman guard Taylor Blevins (Abingodn, Va.) had seven rebounds and four assists to go along with two points.
As a team, Emory & Henry shot 41.7 percent (32-for-68) for the game, scoring 44 points inside the paint and 32 points off of 31 Wesleyan turnovers. The Wasps' bench held a 48-10 advantage over their Wolves counterparts and a 19-2 margin on second-chance points.
Wesleyan was paced by Kyla Williamson with 14 points on four three-pointers while Keiona Benjamin added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench. Myra Patrick had five points and seven boards as well. The Wolves shot just 13-for-46 (28.3%) for the game and were 18.2 percent (4-for-22) in the first half.
Emory & Henry will put its unbeaten record to the test on Tuesday evening when it opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Randolph College. Tipoff between the Wasps and WildCats is set for 5:30 p.m., at the RAD Center.
