Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Keeps Rolling, 75-54, Over Southern Virginia Tuesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (9-1) closed out 2019 with its eighth-straight victory Tuesday, defeating Southern Virginia University (7-2) by a 75-54 score in non-conference action. With the win, E&H completes the calendar year with a 22-3 overall record, the best mark among Old Dominion Athletic Conference schools.

How It Happened
- The squads battled early in the opening period to an 8-8 tie. E&H went on a 7-2 run to lead 15-10 with 2:14 to play, before SVU closed the gap to 15-13 at the end of the quarter.
- On the first possession of the second, the Knights knotted the contest for the last time at 15-all, but a 9-0 run by the Wasps put them in the driver's seat, 24-15. Emory & Henry led by as much as 16 (35-19) thanks to an overall run of 20-4 before going into the break up 37-23.
- Coming out of the intermission, the Wasps quickly pushed their advantage to 17 on a three-pointer by senior forward Peyton Williams (Saltville, Va.), but the Knights went on a 15-5 run to close the gap to single digits (45-38) with 4:05 on the clock. E&H would carry a 54-46 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
- In the fourth, Emory & Henry ran its lead back to 15 thanks to a 9-0 run which covered 1:54. SVU and E&H traded baskets for the middle portion of the quarter before the Wasps scored the final eight points to end the game with its largest lead (21) for the 75-54 final score.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Williams notched her fourth career-high of the year, going for 26 points and came up one rebound short of a double-double to go along with four steals, an assist and a block.
- Senior forward Sydney McKinney (Big Stone Gap, Va.) reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this year, adding eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
- Senior forward Kara Stafford (Bristol, Tenn.) tacked on 10 points, four rebounds and four assists in the victory.

Southern Virginia Individual Leaders
- Katie Garrish had 20 points on 10-for-18 shooting and contributed eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals while Savanna Christenson went for 15 points and eight boards.
- Cory Stout finished with nine points, six rebounds and six assists.

A Deeper Look
- E&H shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) from the field and continued its white-hot conversion rate of 84 percent (21-of-25) from the free throw line.
- Southern Virginia struggled from the floor, making just 25-of-69 (36.2%) of their shots and went 2-for-19 (10.5%) from long range. The Knights only shot four free throws on the evening, hitting a pair (50%).
- SVU held a 39-36 rebounding advantage and used a 15-7 lead on the offensive glass to put up 11 second-chance points.

- The Wasps led, 40-38, on points in the paint and 21-18 on points off turnovers.

- Emory & Henry will take the next 22 days off for exams and the Christmas holiday before returning to ODAC action on Thursday, January 2 against Virginia Wesleyan University. Tipoff between the Wasps and Marlins will be at 4:00 p.m.
