Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Virginia Wesleyan, 78-56, Saturday On The Road

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (15-3, 9-2 ODAC) solidified its sixth-straight 15-win season with a 78-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win at Virginia Wesleyan University (5-13, 3-8 ODAC) Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
- Emory & Henry scored four of the first six points of the game, but an 8-0 run by Virginia Wesleyan put the Marlins up 10-4 with 6:55 left in the opening period.  The Wasps used a 15-5 run through the end of the period to lead, 19-15.
- E&H took control in the middle quarters of the game, outscoring VWU by a 45-24 margin. The Wasps held a 13-point advantage (43-30) at the intermission and outscored the Marlins, 21-9, in the third for a 64-39 margin with 10 minutes to play.
- In the fourth, Emory & Henry was able to go to its bench, providing its starters with rest and allowing the entire team to play significant league minutes. Ten of the squad's 14 fourth-period points came from bench players as the Wasps rolled to the 22-point victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior forward Kara Stafford (Bristol, Tenn.) led all players with 25 points on 6-for-7 from three-point range to go along with two rebounds and two assists. It was her second career-high in the span of four games.
- Senior forward Sydney McKinney (Big Stone Gap, Va.) had 13 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals while senior forward Peyton Williams (Saltville, Va.) added 12 points, five boards, three steals and two assists.
- Sophomore center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) put up six points and nine rebounds off the bench while sophomore guard Taylor Gilbert (Abingdon, Va.) had six points of her own.

Virginia Wesleyan Individual Leaders
- Jessica Jennings paced the Marlins with 19 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals while Sabrina Jones added 15 points and five boards.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry made 43.1 percent (28-of-65) of its field goals with 10 three-pointers and went 12-for-16 (75%) from the free throw line.
- Virginia Wesleyan shot just 21-of-61 (34.4%) from the field and was 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the stripe.
- VWU held a 40-30 rebounding advantage and led, 19-13, on second-chance points.
- The Wasps edged the Marlins, 32-30, on points in the paint but dominated in bench points, 25-8, and points off turnovers (22-12).
