Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Outlasts Bridgewater, 84-79, To Earn Top Seed In ODAC Tournament

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (21-4, 15-3 ODAC) saw a pair of players record 20-point performances as it clinched the #1 seed in next week's Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a 84-79 win over Bridgewater College (14-11, 13-5 ODAC) Saturday afternoon.

The contest also served as Senior Day for the Wasps, who honored the trio of Peyton Williams (Saltville, Va.), Kara Stafford (Bristol, Tenn.) and Sydney McKinney (Big Stone Gap, Va.) prior to the start of the contest.

How It Happened
- The Wasps jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the 2:30 mark of the opening period but the Eagles closed the gap to four with a 6-2 run to end the first.
- Bridgewater continued to put the pressure on through the second quarter, tying the contest three times before going ahead, 30-27, with 1:10 to go before the intermission. BC would lead, 32-29, at the break.
- Returning to action, the Eagles kept their momentum by scoring eight of the first 10 points of the third quarter for a 40-31 advantage. Down by eight with 2:43 left in the stanza, E&H used a 9-2 run to get within two (59-57). Bridgewater would lead by a 63-59 margin with 10 minutes left to play.
- The teams went back and forth early in the fourth. Sophomore center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) tied the game at 70 with just under six minutes remaining and Emory & Henry went ahead for good on the next possession as Stafford hit a layup which continued what would be a 15-2 run.
- The Eagles did not go quietly, scoring seven in a row to make the score 82-79 with seven seconds remaining but a pair of free throws by Hoppers with two ticks on the clock sealed the victory, 84-79.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Hoppers fished with her second career double-double, posting a personal-best 20 points on 6-for-7 shooting and adding 11 rebounds while Williams had a double-double of her own with 20 points, 13 boards, three assists and two blocks.
- McKinney went for 16 points, and five rebounds while junior forward Elizabeth Jones (Wytheville, Va.) and sophomore guard Callie Haderer (Bristol, Va.) had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Bridgewater Individual Leaders
- Ahlia Moone posted a game-high 27 points, adding six rebounds while Madison Baum finished with 11 points and four assists. Kayla Darr scored 10 points for the Eagles.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry hit 28-of-59 (47.5%) of its shots despite shooting just 12.5 percent from three-point range. The Wasps converted 26-of-33 (78.8%) at the free throw line.
- Bridgewater shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) for the game with nine makes from long range. The Eagles were 24-for-32 (75%) from the stripe.
- E&H dominated the boards, out-rebounding BC, 41-28, and using 14 offensive rebounds to score 13 second-chance points. The Wasps controlled the paint, 48-22.
- Both teams fell victim to 24 turnovers and Bridgewater made the most of their ensuing possessions to a 26-22 margin.

- Emory & Henry has secured a bye through the First Round of the ODAC Tournament and, as the #1 seed, will play at the Salem Civic Center on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
